“ Love is yogurt, cottage cheese, milk. Love is a Dairy Product and it has a short self life ,” laments Phinn, a comic book writer; "It ought to come with an expiration date!" Short Synopsis Phinn, a 30-something serial monogamist, bows out of her third engagement when she becomes preoccupied with the idea that love cannot last. She decides to take time off from her comic book writing career and write a manuscript on the subject of “expired love”. But when her grandfather's illness brings her back to her hometown, Phinn decides to make use of the opportunity to connect with her high school sweetheart, eager to see if there is anything to the perfect bliss of your first love. Longer Synopsis Phinn is a serial monogamist, having had several long-term relationships, but has not yet been able to make the ultimate commitment, marriage. She becomes preoccupied with the idea that love cannot last, and decides to write a manuscript on the subject. Honest and amusing, Phinn's wry outlook on love and relationships opens the film. Phinn is in the midst of her third engagement and is starting to have second thoughts , again. Phinn is a successful comic book writer and as she begins to question the shelf life of love, we get to see the world through Phinn's alter ego's eyes, with quirky, comical, and even ridiculous day dreams, nostalgic flashbacks, and animated sequences. She soon comes to realize that the relationship her thoughts return to most often is that of her first love and high school sweetheart, Jack. When her grandfather's illness takes her away from her life in New York, Phinn decides to make use of the visit back home and attempt to connect with Jack again; hoping that all of her cynical theories about love are wrong, and that Jack is her true love after-all. She embarks on a journey to find that lasting relationship, one that won't “sour” or “go bad,” all the while writing her manuscript to the contrary and still juggling her job writing and illustrating her comic book. While back home Phinn stays with her oldest and recently divorced best friend, Jessica; rekindling a twenty year friendship, having some wild nights out as they revisit the early years, and offering support to each other. Meanwhile, Phinn spends a lot of time visiting her beloved Grandfather in some touching and emotional scenes. Enter old flame, Jack. Jack is a jazz musician, who, as it turns out, couldn't be happier to see Phinn. After a couple of impromptu encounters, Phinn begins to believe that Jack truly is the one for her. She calls off her engagement and she and Jack ultimately spend a passionate night together. he film vacillates between off-beat comedic moments, animated action scenes, and poignant moments between Phinn and her sick Grandfather. With her newfound closeness to her mother and brother, and an appreciation for the lasting, unconditional love you have from your family and friends, Phinn finds some peace. |
